Progress Update | Eglinton Crosstown: Mt. Dennis-Caledonia

By: Jamie Kauri

Introduction

In this post I'll be taking a look at the construction progress for Line 5 Eglinton. Next weeks post will be about the construction progress from Duffrin to Allen Rd.

Maintenance and Storage Facility

The EMSF on Industry Dr. has been largely finished for a little over two years now. The facility opened to the public for Doors Open in 2019. Earlier this year, six Light Rail Vehicles were trucked from the EMSF to the surface section in the east portion of the line. Check out my video of train testing on the surface section.

Stations

Mt. Dennis

Mt. Dennis Station is almost complete. The exterior of the main entrance just east of Weston Rd. has glass paneling installed along the entire building. The next steps for the main entrance will be interior work and landscaping.

The Regional Rail platforms for the UP and GO Transit's Kitchener Line trains are almost completely paved but the frames for the shelters are still being finished. Some glass has been installed on the platforms.

Both the entrance just east of the rail tracks and the bus terminal are almost done with work being done to finish the tiling.

Train testing has started with LRVs going back and forth from Mt. Dennis to possibly as far as

Keelesdale.

Keelesdale (Keele St.)

Moving east to Keelesdale Station at Eglinton Ave. W. and Keele St., paneling and landscaping around the station has been completed.

The bus terminal at the north side of the station at Trethewey Dr. and Yore Rd. is mostly complete, although some panels are not yet installed. Around the bus bays, plants, bike racks and seating are starting to appear.

Unfortunately, as the stations along Eglinton Ave. are completed, we see that the font for Wayfinding on Line 5 is different from the rest of the TTC. This is unfortunate because it means not all of the TTC will look the same which could be confusing to some riders. Hopefully, the TTC can standardize everything after the line opens. The main entrance on the north side of Eglinton is almost done with

finishing touches being added to the exterior and interior. Even the platforms are near completion.

The street-level view of the secondary entrance on the north-west side shows a bench and plants surrounding the small station box. At the south-east corner, the tertiary entrance is almost complete with plants around the small station box.

One block west at Yarrow Rd., one of the traction power substations is almost complete on the outside and is likely nearly finished inside as well.

At street-level, raised bike lanes have been built from Yarrow Rd. to just east of the station.

Caledonia

At Caledonia Station, which will connect to the Barrie GO line, the station box has started to

rise up but construction has not yet started on the bus terminal. Unfortunately, construction is not slated to start until 2022 - when Line 5 will be either nearly completed or open to the public already. This means passengers will have to navigate construction zones even after Line 5 opens.

*I took these pictures and visited this section of the line back in mid August so some progress may have been made since then.
